It is the mission of the Juvenile Detention Center to provide consistent, temporary, secure confinement and quality rehabilitative services designed for juvenile offenders and their families in a manner that is responsive to their needs, while always being mindful of public safety.
The Juvenile Detention Center provides temporary secure confinement and care to juveniles referred from local law enforcement agencies, state agencies, Federal Agencies and from our own Probation, Drug Court and F.I.N.S. departments. The center is equipped to house 36 juveniles, male and female, ranging from 10 to 20 years of age.
The Juvenile Detention Center was opened in 1968. The center is located on the north side of the Office of Juvenile Justice Services at 3615 East Prien Lake Road. The facility consists of 18 rooms, 2 observation rooms, 2 recreation rooms, a control room for staff, laundry room, kitchen, nurse's office, 2 classrooms and 2 fenced recreation yards. A computer lab and library are located in the recreation rooms.
The Juvenile Detention Center staff consists of a Manager of Detention, Assistant Manager of Detention, Nurse, Food Service Manager, Shift Supervisors, Detention Officers, Cooks and Maintenance personnel. A Master's Level Counselor provides counseling, suicide screening and assessments for the detention center. In addition, a local psychologist provides consultation to the staff regarding juveniles who have mental health and substance abuse problems.
In 2013, the Center was licensed by the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services.
