Want to Help Save the Cameron Coast?

Volunteers needed to plant beach grass at Holly Beach on Sept. 28

Post Date:08/29/2019

The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana (CRCL) and the Chenier Foundation to Restore America’s Estuaries are looking for volunteers to participate in a beach planting event at Holly Beach in Cameron Parish.

Volunteers are needed to help plant native beach grass – approximately 6,000 plugs – to help increase soil retention along the beach, promote dune growth, provide habitat for nesting birds, and enhance natural shoreline protection for residents.

The project will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 at Holly Beach (additional details will be provided to volunteers via email once you register). The project will go on to no later than 4 p.m.

Laurie Cormier, Program Coordinator/Coastal Zone Manager with the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, said more than 75 people volunteered for last year’s event.

“People love volunteering for this event,” she said. “They can meet other volunteers from around the state, have fun, get some exercise – all while helping to save the Cameron coast. which will, in turn, provide protection to Calcasieu Parish.”

All equipment (shovels, gloves, hammers etc.) will be provided. Lunch and drinks will also be furnished for all volunteers.

The minimum age for volunteers is 10, and all minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Volunteers are asked to register to let CRCL know they plan to participate. Complete an online registration form HERE or contact Kat Loomis at the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana  at kathryn.loomis@crcl.org, 504-708-5865 (office) or 337-591-1918 (cell) for more information.
