Volunteers Needed to Help with Point in Time Homeless Count
The Calcasieu Parish Human Services Department is looking for adult volunteers to help with its Point in Time Homeless Count, which will take place 5 p.m.-9 a.m. Jan. 28- Jan. 29 at the Purple Heart Recreation Center, 4305 Avenue H, in Lake Charles.
Volunteers will assist with asking homeless residents questions from a prepared survey. No experience is necessary and training will be provided. College students, church and civic groups and non-profit organizations are encouraged to volunteer. Bilingual volunteers are also needed.
The Point in Time Count is a national census of homeless residents – living both in and outside of shelters. The process helps the community plan services and programs to appropriately address local needs, measure progress in decreasing homelessness and identify strengths and gaps in the community’s current homelessness assistance system. Data collected helps the parish to apply for funding and advocate for increased community resources.
Last year, about 150 homeless residents – not in shelters - were identified through the survey.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development considers a person to be homeless if they are sleeping outside, in a place not meant for human habitation such as a car or abandoned building, or in an emergency shelter or transitional housing program.
