West Nile Virus Activity Still on the Rise in LA

Calcasieu Parish is Still in the Clear

Post Date:08/01/2018 5:02 PM

West Nile Virus activity is on the rise in Louisiana but Calcasieu Parish continues to be in the clear.

The Centers for Disease Control reports statewide that 17 people have tested positive for the virus so far this year. That’s almost double the number of cases from last year. August and September are historically the hottest months and see the most West Nile activity.

In addition, in the past week, 15 parishes have reported positive mosquito pools for West Nile Virus and two parishes have reported positive mosquito pools for St. Louis Encephalitis.

Calcasieu Parish Mosquito Control wants to remind residents to make sure to use repellent when outdoors, especially during peak mosquito times - dawn, dusk and at night.

Also, make sure to dispose of, drain, or turn over any water-holding containers in your yard. Asian Tiger mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water sources - they need the water to hatch.
