On May 2, 2002, Tiki Hutcherson became the first
graduate of Calcasieu Parish’s Family
Self-Sufficiency Program. At the Police Jury
meeting held that night, Ms. Hutcherson was
presented with a check in the amount of $3,488.92.
Ms. Hutcherson plans to use this money to help her
buy a house for her and her two daughters.
The Family Self-Sufficiency Program was designed to
assist Section 8 participants in getting away from
federal assistance. The program is voluntary and is
open to all families receiving Section 8 assistance
through the Police Jury’s Housing Department.
Under the FSS program, low-income families are
provided opportunities for education, job
training/placement, an escrow account, counseling
and other forms of social service assistance, while
living in assisted housing, so that they may obtain
the skills necessary to achieve self-sufficiency.
Each family that chooses to participate in the FSS
program must sign a five year Contract of
Participation outlining the family’s goals.
