West Nile Virus in Calcasieu

April 17, 2003

Congressman Chris John was in Lake Charles Monday, April 14th to tour the Calcasieu Parish Mosquito Control facility.  He has proposed legislation, which has passed in the House of Representatives, to authorize funds for mosquito abatement.  The Senate is now working on a similar bill.

Mosquito Control officials state that five pools of mosquitoes collected in the parish have tested positive for West Nile Virus.  "These positive pools are just further indication that virus activity is circulating in nature, and residents should take precautions to avoid mosquitoes," said Lucas Terracina, Director of Calcasieu Parish Mosquito Control.

Local residents should use mosquito repellent and wear light clothing that covers the skin, especially in the evening.  Citizens over 50 should take extra precautions since they are the most susceptible to the disease.

Unusual cases of dead birds should be reported

to the local health unit at 475-8744.

Mosquito problems can be reported

to Mosquito Control at 437-3545.
