In 1998, the Police Jury
established an awards program to recognize volunteer firefighters throughout
Calcasieu Parish who have distinguished themselves through exceptional service
and dedication to public safety.
It is important for all of us to
remember that fire protection in the unincorporated areas of the Parish is
provided primarily through volunteer departments, with very few paid staff.
Only through the willingness and efforts of a large number of volunteer
firefighters on a daily basis is fire protection available to all of our
citizens.
It is appropriate, then, that we
honor their invaluable contribution and commitment to public service.
For the year 2001, Certificates of Commendation
were presented this past December to eleven persons who have been selected as
Volunteer Firefighter of the Year for their respective fire districts. The
final award was presented to the person selected as Calcasieu Parish Volunteer
Firefighter of Year, as selected by an independent panel.
