During a special meeting on May 4th, the
Planning and Zoning Board granted unanimously to
approve the establishment of a
Neighborhood/Commercial Corridor Overlay called,
“The Nelson District.” The two-mile corridor
stretches from Lake Charles’ city limits south along
Nelson Road to Gauthier Road. The Police Jury will
hear comments and take final action on the
implementation of the overlay during its regularly
scheduled meeting on May 6th at 5:30 p.m.
The proposal calls for
an “overlay district” that would address several key
issues, including zoning, landscaping, signage,
lighting, buffers, commercial building design
standards, setbacks and parking. Planning &
Development Director Jimmy Vickers states that “we
wanted to be proactive in contemplating the future
growth along Nelson Road. It is important that we
serve the local transportation, economic and
aesthetic needs of the Parish while addressing the
concerns of residents who live along Nelson Road.”
