Police Jury approves sale of Mullers Building for Redevelopment

June 25, 2003

The Police Jury recently approved a proposal that will allow FPL, LLC of Atlanta to buy the Muller’s Building and develop it into a mixed-use facility that would feature 40 lofts, office units, and retail space.

The building will be sold to FPL for $100,000, the minimum price listed in the request for proposals regarding the redevelopment of the building.

FPL’s proposal calls for the restoration of the building’s exterior and interior features.  The escalator running from the first floor to the mezzanine will be kept in place and made a focal point of the lobby area.  The estimated cost for restoring the building is $4.75 million.

Construction could begin by November 1st, with a target end date of December 31, 2004.  Roger Landry, owner of FPL, says he intends to use a local contractor and local laborers for most of the construction work.

Bryan Beam, Assistant Administrator, says, “This project should have a significant impact on the growth and development of downtown Lake Charles.”

The Mullers Building was originally constructed in 1913 and closed as a department store in 1986.
