On Saturday January 15, 2004, voters in Calcasieu
Parish were asked to approve a 2.41 mill tax to fund
parish-wide mosquito control operations. The
initiative was overwhelmingly approved by 90% of the
voters. This tax will now fund the program for the
next ten (10) years, and generate an estimated 2.2
million dollars annually. This is approximately
$600,000 above what was generated by the old 1.81
mill tax. When considering all sources of revenue
(interest income, state revenue sharing, etc.) the
total annual budget for the program will be between
2.4-2.5 million dollars.
“The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, along with
mosquito control personnel, would like to thank the
citizens of Calcasieu Parish for their vote of
confidence in this vital service,” comments Lucas
Terracina, Director of Calcasieu Parish Mosquito
Control. “These additional funds will allow us to
continue to provide the level of service all have
come accustomed to. It will be our goal to once
again be good stewards of these tax dollars so as to
maintain the public trust, while at the same time
provide a mosquito control service that protects
public health and the over-all well being of the
community.”
