May 12, 2004

Dana Guidry, Assistant Planner, conducting a litter presentation to Cathy Trouard's 5th grade class at Bell City High School. As education is one of the key elements of the Parish Litter Program, the Planning and Development Department has been conducting Litter Education Presentations in the public schools throughout the Parish.  The goal of the program is to educated children about the effects of litter on the environment and our community and also ways that they can help reduce litter.  The presentation consists of a visual display, litter activity handouts, and active discussion.  Also, samples of homemade recycled paper are passed around.  The teachers receive educational packets that include copies of handouts and litter and waste education resources, along with a complimentary car litter bag.

According to Dana Guidry, Assistant Planner, "The response from the teachers and the students has been very positive.  The students have been very attentive and have asked a lot of great questions.  They have a positive attitude toward keeping Calcasieu Parish litter free."

Dana Guidry and David Robinson from Parish Planning with Kathleen Hethcoat, 5th grade teacher from Prien Lake Elementary School.David Robinson, Litter Abatement Coordinator, states, "We are trying to instill in children at an early age the importance of proper litter disposal and the negative effects that litter has on the place we live."
