The Calcasieu Parish
Police Jury Litter Abatement Program was named top
litter prevention program in the state at the
2005 Keep Louisiana Beautiful State Litter
Conference recently held in New Orleans.

The Louisiana Department
of Environmental Quality recognizes organizations
that have developed outstanding programs in litter
prevention, beautification and community
improvement, waste reduction and law enforcement.
Different program
initiatives are outlined below:

The Police Jury Litter
Program adopted a new Parish litter slogan “Take
Pride Parish Wide.”

Litter education
presentations were made at several schools
throughout the Parish.

The Police Jury
partnered with the Calcasieu Parish 4-H Club to
help purchase materials to promote anti-litter
messages on school campuses.

A Public Service
Announcement was produced in-house and aired on
several cable networks and is currently airing on
the Parish Government Channel, and three local
radio stations are broadcasting a litter awareness
message.

Anti-litter billboards
have been placed in different areas of the Parish
promoting litter reduction and enforcement.

In partnership with
the LSU Sea Grant Program, boaters’ litterbags
were donated to the Parish and distributed to the
public.

A
litter information booth was set up at the 2005
Southwest Louisiana Home Show Expo with the main
emphasis on proper disposal of construction
debris.

In March of this year
the Police Jury raised the fines for first and
second offense littering.
