Police Jury approves New Home Ownership Program

May 28, 2002

The Police Jury implements a Home Ownership Program through the existing Section 8 program.  The program will allow for Section 8 assistance to go towards a mortgage payment rather than a rent payment.

The families who participate in this program must meet the basic Section 8 requirements, such as low income, and must also meet additional requirements.  The participants must either be first time homeowners or they must not have owned any property in the last three years.  Participants cannot have defaulted on any previous mortgage.  At least one adult member of the participant family must have been employed full-time for at least one year.  The family must attend home ownership counseling classes.

In September of 2000, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development introduced this new initiative.  The program is voluntary for housing agencies.  The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury is pleased to be the first in Southwest Louisiana to offer the program.
