After
much anticipation, the first phase of Calcasieu
Point Landing is complete. This phase included a
three-lane boat launch, convenience store, bait
facility, caretaker’s cottage, fish cleaning area,
boat mooring area, and parking. Wes Crain
with the Division of Planning and Development
designed the master plan for this project. His plan
along with input from local architects, Joe
Champeaux and Todd Mann, resulted in the development
of a fishing village theme and architecture that
reflects Southwest Louisiana.
The
Police Jury received a federal grant from the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
to help pay for the planning and construction of the
boat launch and park located on Henry Pugh Boulevard
off of Big Lake Road. The Port of Lake Charles
provided the land for the project.
This
first-rate facility has caused quite a stir among
fishermen who have eagerly awaited its completion.
It officially opened to the public on August 23,
2003. The Young Men’s Business Club Saltwater
Speck-tacular fishing tournament took place on
opening day, and funds raised went to Special
Olympics. Judging from the number of people there
and the positive comments heard from everyone, the
opening was a great success.
The
next phase of this development, subject to
availability of funds, will consist of a public
fishing pier, outdoor pavilions, an observation
tower, and additional parking. If you are a fishing
enthusiast or enjoy the outdoors, be sure to check
out this wonderful new facility.
