Animal Services and Adoption Center

Rita Cavenaugh, Director

The Calcasieu Parish Animal Services & Adoption Center assumes a unique position in the community. Through education and public awareness, we combine the activities of a law enforcement agency with a public health agency by enforcing state and local laws. The Center works to protect people from the dangers and diseases of animals while protecting animals at the same time.

We also serve as a public health agency which protects people from dangerous animals and diseases of animals, and lastly, a humane agency which is expected to protect animals. As a community service agency we are complaint driven and strive to offer solutions to pet problems.  Impounding an animal is a last resort, and pet owners can do their part by by participating in the Center's creative programs such as the "free ride home" for animals, having their pets wear their rabies tag, or having a microchip implanted. If the owner is home, we have the opportunity to speak with them and offer solutions which can help solve the problem of their dog getting out. The shelter also has an extensive library on animals and offers assistance to students with reports, as a part of our Community Outreach and Humane Education Programs.

Calcasieu Parish Animal Services operates within all unincorporated areas of Calcasieu Parish, the City of Lake Charles, Iowa, and Vinton. Westlake transports animals to the Parish facility. Sulphur built its own Animal Shelter, and Dequincy has holding pens for their animal control programs.
