PUBLIC WORKS
Allen Wainwright, Operations Manager
The duty of the
Department of Public Works
is to provide quality roads for
the motoring public. In order to do this, it takes a skilled work force with the
proper equipment and adequate material on hand. The work force must be properly
trained in good maintenance procedures.
Along with high quality road maintenance comes a need for proper traffic
signs and guides. The Parish Traffic Engineer conducts traffic studies before
placements of any controls are put into effect.
The Parish's national award winning Vegetation Control crew keeps the weed
and brush inside the parish rights-of-way under control. The road crews keep the
potholes patched and all aggregate roads graded smooth.
While Public Works management personnel are busy preparing budgets,
overseeing and controlling expenditures, administering programs, reviewing work
orders, setting up training and answering complaints, they find time to assist
the writing of action guides for the National Association of County Engineers,
and the Federal Highway Administration. The Department of Public Works for
Calcasieu Parish is cited throughout the nation as an example of how
county/parish Public Works should work.

HIGHLIGHTS
Engineering:
In 2005, this department let approximately $8.4 million dollars in road
construction projects and paved approximately 105 miles of road. In 2006,
it is anticipated that approximately $16.3 million dollars in projects will be
contracted and approximately 97.3 miles of road will be paved. Since the
conception of the 2002 Sales Tax Program, approximately 83 miles of road have been
paved.
Public Works:
Calcasieu Parish won the National Roadside Vegetation Management "Excellence
Award" for having the best county managed weed control program in the
nation. Our Assistant Director was selected by the National Association of
County Engineers to assist in rewriting two of its action guides for county
engineers. He was also selected by the Federal Administration to serve on a
committee to develop training programs for local governments. Teams of
government officials from other parish/county governments have come to Calcasieu
to observe our operations.
